What determines fertility outcomes? – using econometrics to investigate reproductive health
In recent decades, many high-income countries have experienced a decline in fertility rates. In most of these countries, the total fertility rate has fallen below the replacement level required for a stable population, raising concerns about potential long-term economic and social consequences. In this bachelor seminar, we delve into the social determinants of fertility behaviors in the context of Germany, focusing on factors such as pubertal onset, work-life conditions, and prevailing values and norms. To analyze these relationships, Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression will be applied. Participants in the seminar will be provided with the unique opportunity to enhance quantitative research skills while contributing to the exploration of the complex dynamics that shape reproductive outcomes. The following questions will be addressed:
- Which mechanisms might explain the link between social factors and reproductive outcomes?
- What challenges arise in establishing causality when investigating this relationship?
