Seminar description:
In this seminar, you will practice your skills in scientific methods, particularly those in econometrics and data analysis. This seminar is relevant for students with an interest in applied econometrics, irrespective of the domain they are interested in (health, labor, education, etc.), as we will focus on the transferable skills of doing applied data science.
The data set we use is a panel data set about the health of older Europeans. You will conduct analyses using Stata and techniques such as fixed effects, logit/probit, nonlinear models (interactions, polynomials). Which techniques you will use depends on your own background and ambitions. You will either analyze health effects of major life events, or heterogeneities by background characteristics in how health decreases with age.
You will write up your findings in the style of a scientific paper. In this way, this seminar provides an excellent preparation for an empirical master thesis.
Pre-requisites:
If you are studying in the QDEM, then your previous courses will have prepared you sufficiently for this seminar.
For MIEPP-students, it is strongly recommended that you have previously taken at least one elective master course in statistics or econometrics. Furthermore, some experience using Stata (for example from previous courses) is expected. Students who have not yet taken any previous elective master course in statistics or econometrics, and who are also not planning to take one this winter semester, are recommended NOT to choose this seminar.
